Q:
How can
I receive better placement with the major search engines?
A: The search engines best reward pages that have well organized with relevant content in response to a search. Do it well and your site is rewarded with high search engine rankings. The definition and measurement of relevant content varies with each search engine, but in general they look for a short (9-ish word) page title containing keywords, a concise (18-ish word) description containing these same keywords, an appropriate keyword tag, then text that helps the search engine software understand what the page is all about. This is achieved by having these same keywords in an appropriate balance of frequency, density, and distribution throughout the page and site. Okay, this is a bit technical, but a web page is a software program that is analyzed by another search engine software program (called a spider) to determine your relevancy, thus giving you rankings. These spiders dislike frames, dynamic content, flash, image-heavy sites, and a wide range of spam tactics in favor of simple, straight forward sentences written around relevant keywords in exactly the right balance. Within the web page there are approximately thirty factors to consider. Then other pages within the site must be synergistic with the theme of the page -- it cannot be the only page talking about a subject within your site. Then other sites on the web must link to your page with keywords contained within and around their links to your site. Likewise, your site must link to other sites when appropriate. There are issues concerned with where you are hosted (whether your site is on a server with other sites that spam), or whether any part of your site violates the rules of the major engines. You then have relationships between the search engines themselves that plays a major role in getting your pages recognized (see our seach engine chart). If you are not in all of the "feeder" search engines, then you will not rank as well as a site that is present everywhere. Added together there are over a hundred factors that are each complex, and that in aggregate makes this a strange and wondrous industry. Every site is unique, and every keyword faces different challenges and competition. Everything changes, and usually often, so if you want to optimize a page for search engines it is best to allow sufficient time and resources - making SEO your new career.
